Harold Ford Can’t Seriously be Running for Senator

Because he was seated at the banquette next to the one I was seated in at the Waverly Inn on Friday night, which is a pretty posh placed owned by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, wearing a Yankees cap and having a good old time with his entourage.
First things first, Mr. Ford. The Yankees cap. A), it’s a nice restaurant and you look ridiculous wearing a baseball cap at dinner (this isn’t LA), besides which it’s a fake attempt at inconspicuousness, because who wears a baseball cap at dinner except someone who’s trying not to be seen, so really you’re trying to accomplish the opposite, and b) like you’re a Yankee fan anyway, you’ve only lived in New York for about 20 minutes.
Point two. The Waverly Inn is pretty posh. (Special occasion for me, but even so, I had the $21 hamburger; a friend had the $49 fish.)
If one were running for senator, wouldn’t one want to take a more populist route? Apparently that’s big right now.
And point three, was it just my imagination or were you a little wasted?
I would think this would suggest that Ford isn’t really running for senator. But then, he’s done lots of things that seem, well, counter-intuitive, so I could certainly be wrong…

From the Crimson:
George Papadopoulos—a former United Research Incorporated project manager for Harvard construction projects in Allston—was arraigned Tuesday morning by the Suffolk Superior Court for embezzling millions of dollars from Harvard and the Massachusetts Port Authority to spend on hotel rooms, home improvements, and Armani suits.
Honestly, how can I consider giving my little pittance to Harvard each year when the institution is so bloated that someone can steal millions?

I probably shouldn’t grace Anon 2:31’s idiotic comment with a reply, but let me note that he left out the next paragraph in the Crimson story:
“URS informed Harvard of the theft and reimbursed the University for the stolen funds last spring, after Harvard obtained an independent review of its transactions with the corporation”

Warren
The problem is with the accounting controls. That he could do it is embarrassment enough.

It seems Ford is not running:

P.S. Is it just me, or is it a bit odd that the NYTimes is publishing his non-candidacy statement as an Op-Ed?

Also,–quite unrelated to the above!–I found this account of a Columbia Journalism Review study of how magazines use their websites quite interesting. It speaks to a number of questions that RB has raised in the past about the nature of editing in journalism, the relationship to online and print publications, and so on.

I just joined Twitter. I didn’t earlier because you slammed it so much. You are so wrong. Twitter is so fun! But to each his own, I guess. But I’m glad I joined!!!!!

I wear a baseball cap because I’m too cheap to get a haircut! As such, I’m also too cheap to eat at fancy restaurants.
In closing, let me say that I only wear Red Sox hats.
