Kevin Youkilis Trashes Sox Fans
Posted on August 26th, 2009 in Uncategorized |
That’s how I read Dan Shaughnessy’s column in the Globe today, anyway.
“You guys don’t have to hear what people say to us on the street. People have made comments to me. I’ve heard them say some things to my teammates.
“People know me. I have good intentions, I do good things in the community. But I’ve heard more and more crap from people, [they] talk to my wife and talk to my people and say stuff, and I’m like, ‘You know what? I’m sick of it.’ ’’
They talk to your people?
Stop whining, Youkilis. You are ugly and have a funny swing.

Truly bizarre. Youk is actually popular up here (unlike, say, JD Drew and Brad Penny). People got on Ortiz and they got on Varitek. Nobody has gotten on Youk, except you. Until now. The sports radio talk shows are full of anti-Youk venom today. And Youk takes off not just on the fans but on the media, and that is even more bizarre. I can’t remember seeing an anti-Youk story anywhere except on this blog. The Boston papers have not been unkind to him.
He talks like he’d prefer to play in one of those many towns where the stands are half full and the half that shows up are all on their cell phones. Weird given his intensity. I wonder where this came from. Richard, the only possible conclusion is that you have gotten to him.

It’s true. I have been pretty hard on him. Sometimes I forget the power of the blog.

I’m a big Sox fan and I find it very easy to sympathize with Youk here. It’s a gotten a little easier for players after 2004 and 2007, but Boston fans are still completely nuts. It’s been a tough season in that fan expectations were raised pretty high at the All-Star break and are at a real low ebb now after losing another series to the Yankeees. I imagine that kind of thing makes the crazies even crazier.
Also, Youk is well on his way to being the best Jewish ballplayer of his generation — stiffer competition than you’d expect — so i’ll always have his back.

I think this was Shaughnessy making trouble, nothing more. Here’s the Globe again: Youk says he loves Boston fans

I dunno, Anon. Youkilis’ ranting was pretty extensive. So he takes it back after getting pounded on talk radio–what would you expect him to do? He may be ugly, but he’s not stupid.

I believe he was, in part, reacting to the fact that lots of local sports radio (those morons who call in to the already overheated hosts and yell at the hosts already yelling) had been complaining that his rushing the pitcher and getting the 5 day suspension was because he’s a selfish player. I think he took deep offense.
Ummm…what-ev, stupids sports radio folks. Now that’s he back, our offense is suddenly just a litle bit better at a time when we needed it. (Yeah, I know I said “our” offense…sad, isn’t it?) It’s true. Fans up here are serious and turn on a dime. It must be wearing on an athlete who is just trying his best to do his job. Well, except for JD Drew. What’s that? He ran to catch a ball? Is he out of the lineup again?
Yeah, those Boston fans are brutal.
